Our brief for this Victorian Tile Restoration Job
We were contacted by a Client, who asked if we would survey their Victorian Minto Tiled floor in Bristol, to asses if the appearance could be improved. We visited a large house that had been divided into flats and the main communal area had a lovely, but shabby looking Terracotta and Black tiled floor. The floor was in a poor state, and the Residents were looking for an improvement as the rest of the area had been recently decorated, which let the overall appearance down.

The Tile Test Area
We used a combination of a solvent based stripping agent and an alkali cleaner/degreaser to a small area of the Victorian Minto Tiled floor to demonstrate to the Residents how the floor will look with the soil removed. The results were so promising that the Residents asked if we would submit a quote and they would then like to proceed.

The Tile Restoration Job
We arrived with a clear plan of removing all the soil and any existing seal from the Victorian tiled floor to give us a bare product that could be left to dry out. We again used two specialist products to loosen the soil and remove the seal still attached to the surface. A section at a time, the floor was stripped by a Rotary Machine with a Brush and then a Nylon Pad.

At each stage of the process the area was rinsed with water to neutralise the products and remove the soil.

The next stage is to remove as much moisture as possible and then allow the tiles to dry naturally, so that the floor contains as little moisture as possible so as not to impede the seal.

The tiled floor was then allowed to dry out thoroughly. It was checked overall using a Moisture Meter before sealing via Microfibre Mop and a Thin Pad to control the product and ensure an even coat.

The tiles are then coated with both an enhancing Impregnator and a wax dressing to enhance the colour and then offer surface protection. We are sure you’ll agree it’s a beautiful floor now it has been restored.

Conclusion
The Clients were highly pleased with the end result of the restoration. The old Victorian tiled floor has been transformed and is now in keeping with the decorated area.
